Investing Responsibly
ESG & Sustainability

At the Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, we believe that responsible investing means achieving attractive, risk-adjusted returns while delivering measurable environmental, social, and economic impact. Our investments are intended to create long-term value for our partners and for the communities we serve—sustainably, equitably, and transparently.

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Impact

Sustainability is embedded at every stage of our investment process. We actively manage our investments to mitigate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks while maximizing opportunities that generate meaningful development impact.

We seek to invest in infrastructure that contributes to long-term, inclusive growth by:

  • Providing low-emission, affordable, and reliable energy
  • Enhancing transportation and logistics accessibility
  • Expanding digital connectivity and communication networks
  • Supporting education and healthcare infrastructure

Our philosophy is clear: sustainable businesses are more resilient, more profitable, and better positioned to deliver long-term value for both investors and society.

Strong ESG Governance for Oversight and Accountability

Strong governance is key to our sustainability approach. We recognize that responsible investment requires clear oversight and accountability, and we have built a robust framework for managing ESG risks and opportunities in alignment with global standards.

Board-Level Oversight

Through the establishment of ESG subcommittees to the Board at our portfolio companies, we will seek to provide strategic guidance and oversight at the portfolio level. ESG sub-committees provide ESG guidance to the Portfolio Company Board, and ensure alignment with international sustainability standards.

Environmental & Social Panel

Our Environmental & Social Panel, composed of some of the Fund’s investors, meets regularly to assess portfolio performance, provide strategic input, and monitor alignment with our Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) and industry best practices.

ESG Integration in the Investment Process

ESG factors are embedded in every investment decision, from due diligence to post-investment monitoring. Our full-time Senior ESG Manager works with the Investment Team to evaluate ESG risks and opportunities during the investment decision-making process, and to monitor progress of closed investments throughout the investment lifecycle.

Investing for Impact and Long-Term Value Creation

Africa’s infrastructure needs represent a unique opportunity to accelerate inclusive growth, strengthen climate resilience, and create sustainable employment. Each investment made by the Fund is assessed using our proprietary impact scoring tool to track, measure, and enhance positive development outcomes.
We seek to invest in infrastructure that delivers measurable impact by supporting:
  • Energy, transport, and digital infrastructure that strengthen critical systems and connectivity
  • Sustainable, low-carbon projects that enhance climate resilience and environmental stewardship
  • Healthcare, education, and job-creating infrastructure that promote social wellbeing and improve quality of life
“By embedding strong ESG principles into every investment decision, we don’t just aim to drive financial returns — we also want to create lasting impact, contribute to building resilient communities, and lead the way in reshaping infrastructure for a more sustainable future.”

Marina Johnson  I  Senior ESG Manager at IAF
