Transformative Investments
Across Africa’s Core Infrastructure Sectors

The Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund seeks to make commercially viable and impactful investments across Africa. Our targeted sectors address some of the continent’s most urgent needs and help drive inclusive, sustainable growth—power and energy, transportation and logistics, water and sanitation, and digital and social infrastructure.

Power & Energy – Advancing Energy Access and Transition

Africa’s growing population, urbanization, and industrialization have created an urgent need for reliable and sustainable energy. The Fund may therefore make energy investments that:

  • Expand energy access for underserved populations
  • Support renewable energy development (e.g., solar, wind, hydro, geothermal)
  • Accelerate Africa’s just energy transition and economic transformation

Thanks to abundant renewable energy sources and fewer legacy constraints, Africa has a unique opportunity to leapfrog fossil-fuel dependency and build a low-carbon energy system.

Key Opportunities include:

  • Grid and off-grid renewable energy
  • Energy storage systems
  • Transmission and distribution infrastructure

Water and Sanitation – Investing in Health and Climate Resilience

Water security is fundamental to sustainable development. Yet, millions across Africa still lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

The Fund may invest in scalable water infrastructure solutions that:

  • Improve access to clean water and sanitation
  • Expand groundwater development and irrigation
  • Enable climate resilience and food security through small-scale irrigation

Investments in water have the potential to unlock benefits in health, agriculture, gender equity, and resilience to climate shocks.

Sector Gaps:

  • 34% of Africans lack access to safe drinking water
  • 60% lack access to basic sanitation
  • Africa’s groundwater resources remain underutilized (just 5% of global withdrawals)

Transportation and Logistics – Connecting People and Markets

Africa’s transport infrastructure is underdeveloped yet full of potential. The Fund therefore considers investment opportunities that span the full logistics value chain—from roads and airports to warehousing and mobility platforms.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Roads, bridges, tunnels, toll systems
  • Rail infrastructure, rolling stock, terminals
  • Airports, seaports, logistics hubs
  • Temperature-controlled storage and bulk handling
  • Rural, urban, and cross-border mobility solutions

With over US$14 billion needed annually in transport infrastructure, this sector is critical to unlocking Africa’s trade, agriculture, and connectivity goals.

Enablers of Growth:

  • The African Continental Free Trade Area is fueling demand for cross-border logistics
  • Urbanization is driving the need for smart urban mobility
  • Decarbonization is attracting capital into electric and low-emission transport systems

Digital & Social Infrastructures – Powering Africa’s Inclusive Future

The pandemic accelerated digital transformation globally and underscored Africa’s digital divide. The Fund considers next-generation infrastructure that empowers communities, unlocks economic potential, and strengthens human capital.

  • Digital Infrastructure, including:
  • Broadband and fiber deployment
  • Data centres and cloud infrastructure
  • Digital platforms and e-services

Only 51% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s primary health facilities have access to clean water. Investing in digital and social systems is critical to closing this gap and improving livelihoods.

Social Infrastructure includes:

  • Education: Investments in smart classrooms, tech-enabled learning, and campus infrastructure
  • Healthcare: Hospital development, mobile health platforms, and water/sanitation for primary health centres
